Spiral galaxies abound in our Universe. We live in a spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. However, not all galaxies are - galaxies come in different shapes, forms and sizes. When looking at a spiral galaxy in profile they appear thin with dark clouds of obscuring dust along the plane. Things that rotate tend to make disk-like objects and for a galaxy like NGC 891 the galaxy is spread out into a thin disk 100,000 light years in diameter. NGC 891 is approximately 40 million light years away from us.
