This object is a supernova remnant. The deaths of stars, especially through supernovae, are what create the heavy elements (things heavier than hydrogen and helium gas) in our Universe. Stars are the crucibles in which these elements are formed and their cataclysmic deaths such as IC 443 spread these elements throughout the galaxy which might later become the materials that form planets and people. We are star stuff.
